Why Write an Inmate?

Mail is one of our oldest and truest forms of communication. Whether it’s meeting your delivery person at the door with your package, receiving exciting news, money or a gift card… receiving happy correspondence can make someones day. Mail is one of the few legal rights provided to incarcerated individuals in the form of cheap paper and golf pencils. For inmates, mail is their lifeline to the outside world. Every inmate should be connected in some way to someone or something outside of the concrete walls and metal bars that contain them. Within todays fast-paced and ever-changing society, it can hard to keep up and this population has been left behind. Yes some inmates do have email, a T.V. and some inmates even have tablets, but we’re not sure that these things really help them stay connected. How many emails on average do you receive a day? Many people are not able to read all of the emails they receive in one day. Inmates do not have the simple life pleasure of receiving emails or text updates of what is happening in the world…. many inmates simply want a friend or someone to correspond with that can shed light on what life is like from a different prespective. Nine out of ten inmates will be released into society one day, and are expected to adjust to an our always-changing society, sometimes without having any outside contact for decades before their release.

Please keep in mind that if you decide to write an inmate, you are communicating with a convicted felon and should be cautious. Only individuals 18 and older are permitted to correspond with inmates. There have been people who have found great friendships and companionships through writing an inmate. We believe that if you take the time to make a difference in their life, maybe an inmate can bring joy to yours. A potential friendship could be a stamp away!
